11:30 struck the clock in the lecture hall. Business students of St.Lawrence College all gathered and took a seat to await the exciting news of an amazing event that was about to hit SLC by storm. "A Warm Welcome to all the students that are gathered here to participate in this event we are hosting. We came up with an event that would get the whole school involved in raising money for Enactus. We came up with the name Get Your Horns On." said organiser, Pam "The Screwdriver" Armstrong. As soon as Miss Armstrong divulged this information the room filled with 1st, 2nd and 3rd year business students became filled with excitement and anticipation.
So the event was broken down like this. 20 teams participating. All with one goal in mind, to raise as much money as they could either selling horns to teachers, students or general public and or getting donations online. The twist is that these participating teams would only have 48 hours to collect all these donations and submit it by Friday at noon to see who would win the trophy and bragging rights of the ultimate marketers of SLC 2013. Looking down at my watch it had now turned 12:15. As I started looking up and around the lecture hall everyone appeared to have their competitive and making money faces on.
As everyone got a team leader and got into their groups, so did I. I was now part of team seven along with eight other 1st year students like myself. Immediately we started to brainstorm all the possibilities of marketing and selling these products to best of our abilities. " We could sell them in res or maybe go out into the public " One the team members suggested. " Or we could put posters up around the school with our contact info" suggested another member of team seven. When the brainstorming process was over we decided to make a facebook group to further discuss our endeavours as well as keep in contact with the group leader. Following the end of our discussions we made our way to the back of the lecture hall to receive our product, the horns.
We now only had one thing on our minds to sell, sell, sell. As I walk with other team members of team 7 we approached a couple of teachers to see if they would like to donate. They were happy to oblige and participate in this amazing event to raise money for Enactus. As we saw how many people were happy to donate and help we quickly become enthralled with excitement with what we were doing. One donation after another kept rolling in by students, teachers, companies, parents, grandparents and many more sources.
The next two days were filled with new marketing ideas, selling, meeting new people and excitement. We had now raised over 500$ in just 48 hours which was an amazing feat considering that this was the first year participating in the event against 2nd and 3rd year marketing and business students. As Friday hit so did the deadline. As teachers combined the total amount of money all the teams made collectively, students waited patiently to hear who the winning team was.
So you want to hear the final total? A whopping $7,600 was raised in 48 hours. That was the highest amount made since the beginning years of this competition. And who was the winning team? Their was a tie for first and both teams were first years! So both teams shared the trophy and both received the bragging rights of raising the most money. It had been a crazy 48 hours but it was greatest 48 hours of college yet. The feeling of helping so many people felt amazing and made it all worth while. All I have left to say is did you get your horns on?
